Luke Pierce named new Head Coach of WHL Kootenay Ice

MERRITT, British Columbia (May 26th, 2015) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – BCHL Merritt Centennials Board of Directors would like to congratulate Head Coach and General Manger Luke Pierce on his new position as Head Coach of the WHL Kootenay Ice of Cranbrook B.C.

Brian Barrett, Governor and Director of Hockey Operations for the Merritt Centennials released this statement earlier today;

“On behalf of the entire organization, we would like to sincerely thank Luke Pierce for his 6 years of dedicated service with the Merritt Centennials. While Luke will be very missed by all of the players, fans and staff, we are excited about this opportunity for him, and we wish him continued success in his new endeavor!”

In a statement released by Luke Pierce earlier today by the BCHL Pierce had this to say about his time as the BCHL Merritt Centennials Head Coach;

“I feel very fortunate to have been the head coach of my hometown team and want to thank all of the Centennials fans, volunteers and partners for their support,” said Pierce. “I especially want to thank (Centennials director of hockey operations) Brian Barrett for his role in helping me grow as a coach and for his constant belief in me. I consider him a great friend and an invaluable mentor.
 
“I also want to thank all my previous players in Merritt who have dedicated themselves to helping grow the program and pushing me to be a better coach. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”

Luke Pierce, a former BCHL Merritt Centennials player himself, became the 24th Head Coach in Centennials history on November 23rd, 2009. Born and raised in Merritt B.C., Luke was named the 2013 Head Coach of Canada West at the CJHL Top Prospects Game in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, as well as the 2013 BCHL Coach of the Year.  In August of 2014, Pierce was selected to serve as Assistant Coach for Team Canada West at the World Junior “A” Challenge held December 14-20, 2014 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.
