Former Centennials forward MacLeod named Northeastern Rookie of the Year

Wade MacLeod of Coquitlam, British Columbia, was recently named Rookie of the Year for the Northeastern University men's ice hockey team in Boston. MacLeod, a freshman forward, was Northeastern's second-leading scorer with 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 37 games.

MacLeod had some key points early in the season, including NU's first goal in a 2-1 win over No. 4 New Hampshire on Nov. 3, but really heated up down the stretch, showing himself as one of the top rookies in the highly-competitive Hockey East Association. He had two goals and an assist in a 7-3 road win over Maine on Jan. 4, scored twice in NU's 4-2 road win over Merrimack on Feb. 8 and had back to back two goal games against UMass-Lowell on Mar. 1 and Boston College on Mar. 7. Against the eventual national champion BC, MacLeod scored the game winning goal in overtime as the Huskies won 3-2. It was the second time Northeastern beat Boston College in overtime on the road in 2007-08.

MacLeod ranked 10th overall in Hockey East scoring and third in freshman scoring. He was second among Hockey East freshmen in goals scored.

Northeastern continued its resurgence in 07-08, posting a 16-18-3 overall record and a 12-13-2 record in Hockey East. Over the past three seasons, NU's overall record has gone from 3-24-7 to 13-18-5 to 16-18-3. Northeastern posted and 11 game unbeaten streak this season, won the Badger Hockey showdown in Madison, Wisconsin, beat New Hampshire twice on the road, and beat NCAA champ Boston College twice on the road.

Prior to Northeastern, MacLeod played two seasons for the Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Hockey League. In 2006-07, he served as assistant captain and posted 51-54-105 totals in 60 games, which ranked fourth in the BCHL. He also earned first team BCHL All Star honors. In 2005-06, MacLeod split the season between the Centennials and PoCo Buckaroos of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. With the Centennials, he played with NU goaltender Brad Thiessen (Aldergrove, B.C./Merritt Centennials) and registered 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points in 41 games.
