The Merritt Centennials scored three times in the third period en route to a 4-1 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals in BCHL action Saturday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.
There was no scoring in the first period as Merritt (15-10-1-1) lead Cowichan Valley (7-17-0-2) on the shot clock 14-4.
The Capitals opened the scoring 11:50 into the second period on a goal by Tyler Mueller before Silvan Harper tied it up for the Centennials on a power play at 13:40. Shots in the second period were 17-6 Centennials and 31-10 through 40 minutes.
The Cents exploded for three goals in the third period. First, it was Kevin Lohan at 2:53, then Scott Patterson on a power play at 5:49 and Regan Soquila into an empty net at 19:33. Merritt had an 11-8 advantage on the shot clock in the third and wound up outshooting Cowichan Valley 42-18 overall.
Richard Sabourin had three assists in the win for the Centennials, Patterson had a pair of helpers, while Harper, Tyler Martin and Diego Cuglietta each chipped in with single assists.
Russell Sanderson made 17 saves in goal for Merritt in the win and Connor LaCouvee kicked out 38 shots between the pipes for the Capitals.
The Centennials went 2-for-3 on their power plays and Cowichan Valley finished 0-for-4 on its man advantages.
