Cents Drop Season Opener 8-2 in Trail

Trail, BC – Sept. 10, 2010

The Merritt Centennials (0-1-0-0) opened their 2010-11 season with an 8-2 loss to the Trail Smoke Eaters (1-0-0-0) Friday night at the Cominco Arena.

SaM Mellor led the Smokies with a goal and three assists while Scott Jacklin had a goal and two assists in the win. Travis St. Denis also scored a pair of goals while Graeme Strukoff, Curtis Tonello, Logan Proulx and Adam Boytinck notched singles.

Max Vallis and Brandon Pfeil each scored for the Centennials in their first BCHL games, while Steve Tresierra and Jakob Reichert added assists.

Trail netminder Kiefer Smiley made 18 saves to get the win. Jared Andersen made his first BCHL start for Cents and gave up five goals on 15 shots before making way for Tyler Steel, who finished with 20 saves on 23 shots.

The Smoke Eaters went 1-for-4 on the power play while Merritt was 1-for-3.

Shots on goal were 43-20 in favour of Trail.

The Centennials next game is also against the Smoke Eaters Saturday night in Trail. Merritt's home opener is Friday, September 17 against Salmon Arm.
