Cents Drop a 3-2 Decision to Penticton

The Merritt Centennials two game winning streak came to an end with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to the Penticton Vees in BCHL action Wednesday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

Merritt (12-6-1-1) opened the scoring on a shorthanded goal by Sean Maktaak at the 13:32 mark. Shots after 20 minutes were 11-10 in favour of the Centennials.

Louie Nanne equalized for Penticton (14-5-0-2) 10:26 into the second period and Brad McClure put the Vees ahead with just 2:40 remaining in the middle stanza. Shots through 40 minutes were 21-19 Cents.

The Centennials tied it up when Sebastien Pare ripped a shot from the slot with 6:14 remaining in the third period, but Sam Mellor scored the winner for Penticton at 18:16 on a power play to give the Vees the win. Merritt had the edge on the shot clock 29-27 overall.

Tyler Steel made 24 saves in goal for the Cents in the loss while Chad Katunar kicked out 27 Merritt shots to get the win for Penticton.

The Centennials were 0-for-2 on their man advantages and the Vees went 1-for-6 on the power play.
