Cents Blank Alberni Valley 3-0

The Merritt Centennials posted their first shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Saturday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

There was no scoring in the first or second period. Merritt (10-3-1-1) outshot Alberni Valley (7-8-0-3) 16-7 in the opening stanza and 8-6 in the middle frame.

The Centennials opened the scoring on a power play at 6:47 of the third period as Derek Huisman notched his team leading sixth goal of the season. Tyler Martin scored for the fourth straight game to give Merritt a 2-0 lead before Scott Patterson put it away with an empty net goal. It's the third consecutive game that Patterson has found the back of the net. Final shots were 37-23 for the Centennials.

Tyler Steel made 23 saves in goal for Merritt as he recorded his first shutout of the 2012-13 season and the fifth of his BCHL career. Jay Deo kicked out 34 shots between the pipes for the Bulldogs.

The Cents went 1-for-5 on the power play while Alberni Valley was 0-for-2 on its man advantages.

Sebastien Pare, Payton Schaefer, Sean Maktaak, Richard Sabourin and Kevin Lohan each had assists in the win.

The Cents next game is Sunday, October 28 as they continue their 40th season of junior 'A' hockey with the lone visit of the Victoria Grizzlies to the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. Game time is 2 pm.
