2011-12 Season was a Record Breaking One for Centennials

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Merritt, BC – March 14, 2012

With the conclusion of the 2011-12 BCHL regular season, the Merritt Centennials are pleased to announce that the team has set a new franchise mark for fewest goals against in a season.

The previous record of 176 was set in 1978-79. This season, the Centennials allowed 171 goals, breaking the record by five.

“To set an all-time record for goals against was never one of our goals at the beginning of our season, and to be honest, we never even realized we were within reach of the record until our final weekend," admits Cents Head Coach & GM Luke Pierce. "It says a lot about the commitment to team defence that this group has made, and these players should be extremely proud of the accomplishment."

"Obviously it helps to have two of the best goaltenders in our league and both Lino and Tyler played a major role in breaking this franchise record.”

Statistically, the 2011-12 season represented the highest point total (76) for the Centennials since 1978-79 (98) and the most wins (34) since 1988-89. The Cents 18 losses in 2011-12 also marks the fewest since the 2005-06 season. Their second place finish in the Interior Conference is the highest since 2000-01, when Merritt also finished second in the Interior.

2011-12 also marks the third straight year that the Centennials have qualified for the Fred Page Cup playoffs.
