Cents Spring Camp a success, Cents Cup handed out

The Merritt Centennials Spring Camp wrapped up this weekend, with the Cents experimenting with a new format for their camp.

This year the Cents held their Spring Camp in a 5 team tournament format, with the first place team advancing to the finals. Team Black had the fortune of the best seeding, but Team Yellow was able to advance all the way through the Semis and win the inaugural Cents Cup.

Head Coach Joe Martin liked what he saw out of the new format, mentioning that several players were able to live up to expectations this weekend. Martin also reiterated that it’s only spring camp, however, and there’s more evaluation to be done, but he did like what he saw over the course of the weekend.

“It’s hard to single out a couple players at this point. In the next few days, couple weeks we’ll be doing so. But right now it’s still just deliberating with the staff, and talking with the kids and their prior coaches, getting to know a lot more about them before we go public with any individuals.”

With more recruiting to be donel, and a large amount of returning players, Martin is optimistic going into the next season. “We have a lot of returning players, and some tough decisions on reaching players. But we’ll get there with those guys. We’re really excited about the season, but it’s a long way away. It’s only April.”
