Cents Knock Off Westside 3-1

Merritt, BC – October 17, 2009

Before 555 fans at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena, Jeff Jones and David Sabey each had a goal and an assist to lead the Merritt Centennials to a 3-1 victory over the Westside Warriors in the BC Hockey League Saturday night.

The win ends a three game losing streak for the Centennials (4-8-0-1) while the loss snaps Westside's (9-4-0-0) four game winning streak.

Merritt opened the scoring with a power play goal from Jones just 2:05 into the first period.

Sabey scored at 16:54 of the second to give the Cents a 2-0 lead before Grayson Downing added a power play marker with 28 seconds left in the middle frame.

Sabey's goal would stand as the game-winner when Jordan Soquila took a pass from Alex Valenti on a 2-on-1 and wristed a shot to the top corner on Warriors goaltender Cam Gorchynski to make it 3-1 Merritt.

Cents netminder Cole Holowenko stopped 48 shots to earn first star honours. Gorchynski finished with 26 saves for the Warriors.

Merritt wound up 1-for-4 on the power play while Westside was 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

The Centennials next action is on the road Wednesday in Vernon while the Warriors open a Coastal road trip Wednesday in Surrey.
