John Schiavo signs with the Missouri Mavericks

Former BCHL Merritt Centennials, and Macon Mayhem’s right wing, John Schiavo has signed with the Missouri Mavericks of the ECHL.

Here is the official press release from the Missouri Mavericks from August 5th, 2015:

INDEPENDENCE, MO (August 5, 2015) — The Missouri Mavericks announced Wednesday afternoon that they have signed forwards John Schiavo and Liam Stewart to standard player contracts ahead of their 2015-16 season in the ECHL.

John Schiavo is entering into his first professional season this fall with the Missouri Mavericks, but has already turned some heads in the hockey world.  The twenty-one year old forward from East Patchogue, New York participated in the 2015 New York Islanders Mini Camp earlier this off-season and impressed the Mavericks coaching staff with his stick-handling skills on a ridiculous shootout goal.

“Having the Mavericks coaching staff on site at the New York Islanders Mini Camp this summer was a huge benefit to this club, and seeing Schiavo in action first-hand really opened our eyes” said Richard Matvichuk, Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations for the Missouri Mavericks.

“I am really excited to start my first professional season with the Missouri Mavericks,” said Schiavo.  “The opportunity to play for a coach like Richard Matvichuk, who had a very successful NHL career, is an honor.  I am looking forward to getting to Independence!”

About the Missouri Mavericks: The Missouri Mavericks are a professional ice hockey team based in Independence, Missouri and the proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Islanders (NHL) and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Mavs are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the ECHL—the Premier ‘AA’ Hockey League in North America, led by General Manager Brent Thiessen and Head Coach Richard Matvichuk.  Founded in 2009, the Mavericks are entering into their seventh season in franchise history at Independence Events Center.  Missouri competed for five seasons in the (now defunct) Central Hockey League (CHL) before formally joining the ECHL on Oct. 7, 2014 ahead of their 2014-15 campaign.  Lamar Hunt Jr. was announced as the new President and Owner of the Missouri Mavericks on Feb. 6, 2015.  The Mavs have made playoff appearances in five of their past six seasons, and have been honored numerous community and league awards including the Harry S. Truman Special Community Service Recognition Award, the Bud Poile Governors’ Cup (CHL), and the CHL Franchise of the Year Award for four consecutive seasons.

We wish John all the best as he follows his hockey career!
