The BCHL is pleased to announce 2016 BCHL Broadcaster of the Year award will be shared by two talented and deserving individuals. Powell River Kings voice Alex Rawnsley and Nanaimo Clippers play-by-play man Dan Marshall are this year’s winners.
The results come after a survey of all of the BCHL’s play-by-play broadcasters from the 2015-16 season.
For Rawnsley, who started the Kings’ 24/7 streaming audio service in 2014 and also maintained the team’s blog during his tenure, the accolade takes special meaning given the league’s broadcast fraternity made it happen.
“I’m incredibly honoured to be recognized by my peers,” said Rawnsley. “To share it with a guy like Dan, who I’ve looked up to since before Day 1, is incredibly flattering. Congrats to him and a big thank you to everyone who voted. I’m very humbled.”
Marshall, who also took the BCHL Broadcaster nod in 2012 and 2015, continued his extra contributions this past season including his Monday night Clippers – BCHL show on 106.9 The Wolf, Clippers features on Shaw TV and calling the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game in Surrey. His enthusiasm for the game has not waned at all through the years.
“I’ve been doing this a long time and I’m still as excited about the BCHL season as I’ve ever been,” said the Coquitlam native, adding his appreciation for his Island Division counterpart Rawnsley. “I have a huge amount of respect for Alex. If I had to choose one guy from around the BCHL that I called and asked advice of, it would be him.”
Marshall is busy this summer with Nanaimo Timbermen lacrosse broadcasts but he’ll be set for his 16th BCHL season in 2016-17.
Rawnsley is a native of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia and this recognition will be the final feather in his BCHL cap as he moves on to new pursuits, including managing the website sportscasterlife.com.
